UA Regents' Professors

The highly prestigious title is reserved for faculty members with exceptional achievements that have brought them national or international distinction. It also serves as recognition of the highest merit and unusual contributions to the quality of the individual's university. Only 3 percent of a university's tenured or tenure-track faculty body can bear the title Regents' Professor at any given time.

Research Funding

  • Dr. Sue Brown has received funding from the Flandrau Science Center and the National Science Foundation.
  • Dr. Hsinchun Chen has received over $45 million dollars in research funding from the National Science Foundation, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Justice, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, SAP, New Mexico Tech, and Library of Congress, among others.
  • Dr. Moshe Dror has received funding from the State of Arizona, The University of Arizona, NATO, Federal Highway Administration, and Canadian Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council.
  • Dr. Gondy Leroy has received over $2.6M in funding as principal investigator from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, Microsoft Research and several foundations. She has been co-investigator on projects totaling over $2M in funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has received funding for outreach projects to increase diversity in IT from NCWIT, the Panhuise Family Foundation and Edison International.
  • Dr. Jay Nunamaker has received more than $55 million dollars in research funding from IBM, NCR, Intel, AT&T, National Science Foundation, DARPA, U.S. Army Research Lab, U.S. Navy, and AFOSR, among others.
  • Dr. Sudha Ram has received over $15 million dollars in research funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, NASA, NIH, CIA, IBM, Ford Motor Company, and SAP Global Research, Duke Teradeta Center for Customer Relationship Management among others.
  • Dr. Joe Valacich has received research support from AT&T, Microsoft, NSF, DHS, and IARPA.
  • Dr. Suzie Weisband has received more than $2 million dollars in research funding from the National Science Foundation and Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, among others.
  • Dr. Daniel Zeng has received over $4 million dollars in research funding from the National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and Arizona Department of Health Services, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation among others.

Faculty Awards (National and Regional Awards)

  • Dr. Hsinchun Chen has received the following awards: 2013 and 2004 UA Innovator of the Year, IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, National Chiao-Tung University (Taiwan) Distinguished Alumnus Award; Outstanding Overseas Scholar of Chinese Academy of Sciences (China); University of Arizona Technology Innovation Award; Joseph Peggs and Margie Peggs Kault Award for Mentoring and Doctoral Placement (from University of Arizona); Andersen Consulting Professor of the Year Award; SAP University Alliance Grant Award in Research/Applications; AT&T Foundation Award in Science and Engineering; NSF Research Initiation Award and his COPLINK project won the INFORMS Design Science Award at the ICIS Conference held in Paris, December 2008. He has served as a Scientific Counselor/Advisor of the National Library of Medicine (USA), Academia Sinica (Taiwan), and National Library of China (China). He was elected a China National 1000-Elite Chair Professor with Tsinghua University and a National Taiwan University Chair Professor. He recently served as lead Program Director for Smart and Connected Health at NSF.
  • Dr. Jay Nunamaker has received the following awards: AIS LEO Award for Lifetime Exceptional Achievement in Information Systems; Educator of the Year Award (from International Association for Computer Information Systems); Educator of the Year Award (from Data Processing Management Association Education Foundation); Editors Choice Award (from PC Magazine); Groupware Achievement Award; Andersen (Accenture) Consulting Professor of the Year Award.
  • Dr. Joe Valacich has received the following awards: listed as a “Prolific Author” at MIS Quarterly (1977-2015); Best Business Developed Serious Game; and Best Adaptive Force Award (selected by the Office of the Secretary of Defense). Hsinchun Chen and Jay Nunamaker are among the top 5 researchers in the field as measured by their h-indexes. Drs. Zeng, Valacich, Ram, Goes, and Brown are also consistently listed at the top of productive IS researchers.

The department has regularly been ranked among the top departments in research productivity in the top 3 journals of IS: Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, and Journal of MIS.
