LaSalle-Chen Scholarship
Established in 2010, the LaSalle-Chen Scholarship is available to students with advanced standing in MIS or Operations Management.
The scholarship’s goal is to encourage and support students with significant academic promise that have overcome personal challenges to obtain advanced standing in MIS. The scholarship’s focus is one of encouragement and allowing students to fulfill their promise, and therefore is open to all students who obtain advanced standing in MIS regardless of their current GPA.

The scholarship is an annual award of $1000, and is renewable as long as the student continues to make progress towards their degree and remains in good academic standing. There will be a total of 5 scholarships awarded per year.

The LaSalle-Chen Scholarship was established in honor of two MIS professors.Dr. Jim LaSalle is Professor Emeritus of the MIS Department at the University of Arizona, having served the MIS department and The University for more than 30 years as a master teacher. Dr. Hsinchun Chen is McClelland Professor of MIS at the University of Arizona. He has served the MIS department and The University for more than 20 years and has been a prolific researcher.
Application Process
Students may apply for the LaSalle-Chen Scholarship following the professional admission process. After students have been notified of the advanced standing decisions, the MIS Director of Undergraduate Programs will notify students of the LaSalle-Chen Scholarship, and students may complete an application through the last day of classes. The application materials will include the following:
- Professional resume prepared for the Eller Professional Admissions
- Personal statement prepared for Eller Professional Admissions
- A one-page summary of their academic, leadership, and philanthropic activities
- A statement of how the scholarship will aid the applicant in completing their studies
- A one-page essay on a current event or recently introduced product related to MIS that they feel will have a significant impact on society
Evaluation Criteria
Applicants will be evaluated and awards will be made on the following basis
- Selected by the MIS Director for Undergraduate Programs, two or more reviewers will review the application materials and recommend to the Director a pool of candidates, based on the application materials submitted.
- The Director will screen the recommendations and, with the concurrence of the MIS Department Chair, nominate a pool of candidates for the final selection process along with a statement of the funds available for scholarships.
- After final grades are posted and Eller Undergraduate Programs documents the students are eligible to being their advanced standing studies, awards of $1000 will be dispersed to their students Bursar’s accounts.
Awards Renewals
At the end on the first year, LaSalle-Chen Scholarship recipients may apply for renewal of their award for one additional academic year. Recipients requesting award renewal must be continuing students in good standing in MIS or OM, present documentation that they are making adequate progress to their degree and provide a statement of their professional plans in the field of MIS or OM.
