MIS Programs Ranked as “Exceptional” in UA’s Graduate Council Assessment Report.

March 9, 2009

The University of Arizona’s Graduate Dean, working closely with upper administration, Graduate Council, Faculty Senate, directors of graduate studies, other faculty, and students, advocates for graduate education set the direction for the Graduate community.

Every year they collect data and compile a report to help programs monitor their performance compared to national trends.

The Graduate College provided data on completions, time to degree, diversity, acceptance rates, entering GPAs, number of graduates, and programs’ share of graduates. Programs verified data, provided additional data when available, and wrote short narratives. After deans’ ratings, a subcommittee of the Graduate Council reviewed the materials and produced the report.

Both the Masters in MIS and the MIS Doctoral programs were rated as “Exceptional” which is defined as “Programs that stand out in terms of overall quality, planning, focus, and capacity to define and further distinguish the university. Programs with different missions may excel in different ways; there is no one model for excellence. For example, a professionally oriented program may produce exceptionally trained practitioners and have an outstanding placement record. A research Ph.D. may have a top ten national ranking. These are the programs that draw students from around the world and are our ‘destination’ programs. Excellent programs must be rated very high on Scholarship/Academic variables (5) and receive strong ratings on effectiveness and inclusion (4 or 5)”.
