Walmart Summer Internships Provide Undergraduates an Opportunity of a Lifetime
Summer internships are important to both the sponsoring company and students. Internships allow a company to assess future employees without making long-term hiring commitments while meeting temporary staffing needs. In addition, internships give companies the exposure of enthusiastic student-employees who have fresh ideas and knowledge of the latest technology and techniques. Students benefit from summer internships because it enables ‘real-world’ experiences as they put their classroom theory into practice. It also gives them the opportunity to work with professionals in a chosen field and showcase their talents and capabilities to a prospective employer. Read the results of an interview we conducted with two Eller MIS undergraduates before they left for Bentonville, AK. The students are Joseph Vinikoor and Wendy Willis. We plan to interview these two students again in August when they return to Tucson so keep posted! [more]
Bill Neumann Reaches Milestone – Teaching 10,000 Students!
MIS Faculty member William (Bill) Neumann reached a milestone this last Spring semester. He has now taught 10,000 students in the MIS 111 course! One of Bill's teaching trademarks is his flashy ties. Therefore, the MIS Department honored Bill with his own ‘10,000 MIS 111 Students Taught’ tie to commemorate this occasion. We interviewed Bill to find out more about this milestone and methods he uses to effectively teach up to 1,200 students a semester. Bill states ".... it takes a team (to manage such large classes.) Dr. Mark Patton has worked with me as an instructor in MIS 111 the entire time I’ve been the MIS 111 Course Coordinator. The lecture is the fun part – we use clickers, videos, and cases in class to make the class relevant." [more] Jay Nunamaker and BORDERS Team to Present Avatar Kiosk in Warsaw
Jay Nunamaker and his BORDERS team has been asked by FRONTEX to run a workshop in September in Warsaw, Poland for a delegation of border guards from 27 EU nations. The workshop is titled: “Intelligent Agents for Screening and Decision Support at Border Crossings” and will showcase BORDERS avatar technology. Since humans are poor at detecting lies and other deceptive behaviors, BORDERS developed an artificial intelligent agent embedded in an avatar to conduct primary screening at ports of entry, including border crossings and airports. The kiosk is equipped with several instruments to record physiological and behavioral reactions during questioning. BORDERS has already investigated over 300 psychopysiological and behavioral cues ranging from vocalic, linguitistic and kinesic to cardioresiratory, eye behavior, and facial skin temperature. The initial round of experiments and the first generation avatar kiosk are already completed. During 2010, BORDERS will be designing the second-generation avatar and identifying field test scenarios. [more] FRONTEX is the European Union agency for external border security. It is responsible for co-ordinating the activities of the national border guards in ensuring the security of the EU's borders with non-member states.
